Evelyn Sanders believes in fresh starts, clean slates, and the undeniable power of a good list. Especially a New Year’s Eve list. Kiss her boyfriend at midnight. Toast the future. Earnestly tackle the handwritten resolutions that are absolutely going to fix everything.

Instead, she’s dumped in a cab before the ball drops and left crying on a sidewalk, coatless and alone.

Enter Oliver Adkins, the next passenger in that very same car. Stuck in a situationship, quietly flailing, and just trying to get home without spiraling. Until he finds Evelyn’s abandoned coat and the list tucked inside the pocket.

Volunteer at an animal shelter? Sure. Ask for a raise? Bold, but okay. Pole dancing class? Deeply confusing, yet strangely compelling.

Over the next thirteen moon cycles, Evelyn and Oliver move through the Bay Area in parallel, orbiting one another without ever quite colliding. They almost meet through Pride Month drag screenings, late-night Reddit threads dissecting Guster lyrics, knitting circles, tarot antics, and a cranky shelter dog they both adore. At Bay to Breakers, masked and anonymous, they share a kiss that feels written in the stars, lighting up something unseen between them before the crowd pulls them apart again.

Unaware of how closely they’ve been circling, Evelyn chases her goals while Oliver checks off her resolutions, each small choice lighting another point in an unseen constellation map.

When New Year’s Eve comes around again, every choice leads them to the same place. And Evelyn and Oliver realize that sometimes, the best plans are the ones we never make.
